The Mercury Real Estate Guide : September 9th 2010
property MERCURY Thursday, September 9, 2010 --- 17 1820s original who arrived in the colony from Scotland in 1822. It remained in the Officer family until the 1920s. It is National Trust and Heritage listed. The name came from Castle Hallgreen in Kincardinshire Scotland. A beautiful entrance opens up into a grand reception and cloakroom, and then into a 27m hallway that includes four fluted cedar arches. At one end is the original ballroom and at the other, the main family living area and kitchen. Downstairs are the 12 rooms of servant accommodation and utility rooms, including the original 1830s kitchen which still retains its original cast- iron range. Floors are flagstone, walls are convict brick with visible broad arrows. Today Hallgreen sits on about 0.6ha of lawns and rambling gardens overlooking the Derwent River. There is a large Euonymous lucidus tree that is listed with the National Trust, along with other mature trees. The extensive stonework, retaining walls, arbor, garden folly and pond were all constructed in the 1920s. While the home comfortably accommodates a modern family, it also has potential as a bed-and-breakfast, notes consultant Annie Jacometti.
